ATEX vs IECEx: What's the Difference, and Which Does a Hong Kong Plant Need?

2026-06-28

When buying explosion-proof (Ex) equipment, the most common question Hong Kong plants ask is: what's the difference between ATEX and IECEx on the certificate, and which one do I need? Here's the simple version.

The difference in one line

  • IECEx is the globally recognised scheme established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
  • ATEX is the European Union directive governing Ex equipment placed on the European market.

Their technical requirements are largely identical (both built on the IEC 60079 series). The main difference is legal scope.

Which one for Hong Kong?

Hong Kong follows the IEC 60079 series, regulated by the EMSD:

  • IECEx is the internationally preferred choice and is widely accepted in Hong Kong;
  • If equipment may later be exported to or serve European customers, ATEX is required;
  • Many quality manufacturers carry both IECEx + ATEX, which is the safest option.

Three checks when purchasing

  1. Certificate validity: IECEx certificate numbers can be verified in real time on the official CoC database at iecex.com.
  2. Parameter match: confirm the protection type (Ex d/e/i/n), temperature class and ingress protection (IP) match your hazardous-area classification.
  3. International certification only: products with only China CCC/GB and no IECEx/ATEX are not recommended for compliance-driven Hong Kong lines.

How RAPIDREX works

Every Ex component we supply in Hong Kong must carry IECEx or ATEX certification, verified on iecex.com before stock-in. Contact us to verify a certificate or to assess the hazardous areas in your plant.
